Pack and Troop 301 helps provide meals and Thanksgiving for the Elderly
The boys shown in he photo are Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from Den 4 and Den 7 Web I's. Also, we had sisters join us too! Our Scouts included David Baughan, Christopher Cowardin, Gennaro Cardarelli, Evan Hood, Ryan Oswald, Harrison Jones and Patrick Scolese. Sisters Sadie Jones, Alex Oswald and Bella Cardarelli.
Mrs. Campbell, one of the lady's we delivered to on Alfred Street, shared with us that her son was the first and her daughter the second African American children accepted into Saint Mary's School. This came after our dark days of Saint Mary's segregation started to dissipate in the early 1970's.
She "felt so blessed having Saint Mary's children deliver the Thanksgiving Dinner Food Baskets. A totally different culture from her childhood, when no parents would even let her enter into Saint Mary's Church to pray side by side with their children."

Pack 301 Scouts welcome World War II Veterans and Show Respect
Just a quick note to report on Pack 301's participation with the Honor Flight today. We had 10 boys come out, which given the short notice and the hectic life we all live was pretty good.
I have to say that the event left me a little short on words. To see a group of World War II vets get of the busses and slowly approach the memorial was moving. Our boys were guided to form a receiving line of sorts and shook a number of the Vets hands. The men literally beamed at our boys being there to greet them. Many adults were there to greet these heroes as well and just to say "thank you" to them for their service so many years ago. I had a wife of one of the men take me aside and tell me (almost with tears in her eyes) how much this meant and that she knew someone who had come home from one of the honor Flight trips saying that he has not had so many people say "thank you" to him since the day he came home from the war.
A number of these Vets were in fact, former scouts and spoke of that to our boys. And I had one gentlemen tell me twice that I had the greatest job in the world (as a scout leader). Our boys were a true credit to our Pack. They welcomed the Vets, spoke with them enthusiastically, had their pictures taken, and then assisted in serving lunches and cleaning up after lunch.
Please see the photos. I believe the most significant picture, however, was one with a Pearl Harbor Survivor. I spoke with this gentlemen and learned that he had been on the Battleship West Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_West_Virginia_(BB-48) ) that fateful day. I do not believe that I have ever before shaken hands with a Pearl Harbor Survivor and doing so today was a privilege and honor that I will always cherish.
Many thanks to Shaun Kelleher for coordinating Pack 301's participation in today's event. Shaun has graciously offered to coordinate future Pack 301 participation with the Honor Flights and based on today's event, I have enthusiastically accepted his offer.

About Boy Scouts.....
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
Scouting is about citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness: its aim is to help boys grow into good citizens who are strong in character and personally fit. Cub Scouting in particular is a family-oriented program designed specifically to address the needs of younger boys. Cub Scouting provides a framework of structured activities that are fun and exciting, and at the same time provide opportunities for you, the parents, to instill lessons of leadership, sportsmanship, loyalty, teamwork, and trustworthiness. For more information, please read all about Boy Scouting at the main web site of the Boy Scouts of America. Also, you can read more detailed information about Pack 301.
What does Pack 301 do?
This past year, Cub Scouts from Pack 301 have:
- Built and raced Pinewood Derby cars
- Made campfires and camped overnight
- Helped park ranges eliminate weeds and maintain trails
- ”Cooked“ and ate MREs
- Spent a night on a WWII submarine
- Laid wreaths at Arlington Cemetery
- Decorated veterans graves with flags for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day
- Collected food for local food-banks
But as they say, pictures are worth a thousand words, and we have LOTS of pictures. Just click on any of the photos to the left to learn more about that activity (note that the pictures change whenever you refresh the page). Or check out our past activities. page
Also, to help you figure out who everyone is, we’ve created a who’s who page with photos of many of the key adults in Pack 301, along with their contact information.
Hey - Volunteer Now! You are Wanted!!!!
We need volunteers to help make the Pack go. Please step up to the plate and do your best for the Pack. Surely you can make the time to organize or assist with one activity, like a campout. We need assistant den leaders and assistant cubmasters. Not sure what is involved in being a Cub Scout adult leader? Checkout the official guidebook.
We also need volunteers to serve as campout coordinator or to serve as committee co-chair. Are you an experienced Scout, or perhaps even an Eagle Scout? We REALLY need your leadership skills and knowledge of Scouting—please volunteer.
If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact Bill (the Cub Master), Rob Hood (the committe chair), or any of the Den Leaders. You are also welcome to come to any of our committee meetings which are usually the first Wed of every month.
For more information and a complete list of volunteer opportunities, check out the “Help the Pack Go!” tab above.
Please send corrections, suggestions, den news, and any other feedback to the Pack 301 webmaster at webmaster@pack301stmarys.org. Thanks!
Would you like to help build and maintain this web site? I’m happy to have help and there are lots of ways you can help.
